Posted by Joshua Shaffer on August 29, 2011 at 11:00 AM

Today the Aulani Resort opens in Hawaii on the island of Oahu. It is the 3rd Disney Vacation Club location outside of the Disney theme pars property. It cost an estimated $800 million to build. Walt Disney Imagineers collaborated with local architects and cultural experts to design and construct what will celebrate the customs and tradition of Hawaii. Disney characters including Mickey and Minnie Mouse will be seen at the resort, however unlike at theme parks where they act as hosts, at Aulani they will be presented as fellow guests.
The Name "Aulani" means "Messenger of a chief".
